I think this was my attempt at writing a Michael Jackson-style song. Weird.
Anyway this, like all our non-punky songs, took a shit-ton of work to get it so we were happy with how it sounded. But I think it paid off. I like that the name 'Clive' gets in there.
lyrics
Lyrics:
“Ladies and gentlemen, I’d like you all to witness
Fantastic tricks like you have never seen before!”
The Great Mephistophes comes out to great disinterest
Doing routines that they have seen 10 times or more
“Oh, what a dreadful bore…”
The Great Mephistophes, it seems, is really not great
He’s getting no response; no cheers, no ‘oohs,’ no ‘aahs’
He’s hypnotising with a 10% success rate
“OK, now! Moving on…”
The crowd moves to the bar
He seeks success but failure’s funnier
And he’s a funny guy…
He keeps coming back for more punishment
He’ll give it one more try
“Listen to my voice! Look into my eyes!
I’m the hypnotist! You’ve been hypnotised!”
Mephistophes pursued his dreams, they led him down a dead end
And now it seems he’s splitting at the seams and will eventually SNAP!
No more support, not even sympathy from his friends
“He should be moving on…”
His wife is moving out
He seeks success etc…
He only wants to be outrageously famous, is that so much to ask?
Seeking success but finding only regret, he solemnly says “Listen to my voice…”
“Listen to my voice! Look into my eyes!
You’re not a hypnotist, it’s time you realised
I hate Mephistophes! I miss my husband, Clive…”
As she walks away, he practices his lines.
